Breathe In Gas, Argon

There are many elements on the periodic table. In high school, it was customary that many of you would have to learn about or sometimes even memorize all of the factors on the periodic table. One of these elements is considered a noble gas. Argon has an atomic number of 18, and it is the third element in the noble gas category. One statistic that may surprise you is that Argon is the third most common gas in the Earth’s air. It is at 0.93% of the atmosphere, this makes it more common than carbon dioxide. It is the third most rich gas and the most frequently used noble gas. Argon has a full outer shell and this makes it well-balanced and more immune to bonding with other elements.

This noble gas has approximately the same solubility in water as oxygen gas does. It is two and a half times more soluble in water than nitrogen gas. This is a colorless, tasteless, odorless, and nontoxic gas in both its liquid and gaseous forms. Under most conditions, this gas is inert. Astonishingly, despite its status as a noble gas, argon has been found to form a few compounds. Most of these compounds are stable, so there is no real risk associated with it.

Argon is the fundamental raw material used by any industry to produce a purified argon product. It is isolated from the other elements in the air we breathe by fractionation. The most common way to do this is by cryogenic fractional distillation. This procedure also produces purified neon, oxygen, krypton, xenon, and nitrogen.
